Nuclear medicine is a branch of medical imaging that uses very small amounts of radioactive material to diagnose or treat a variety of diseases, including many types of cancers, heart disease and certain other abnormalities within the body. Positron emission tomography, (frequently combined with CT) also called PET (PET/CT) scan, is an advancement in nuclear medicine imaging that is very helpful in diagnosis of cancer and monitoring effectiveness of treatment.
