In case you couldn’t tell, here at BICRAD we’re incredibly proud of the amazing men and women who make up our team. We have over 100 radiologists on staff, who serve patients each and every day across the bay area at over 30 hospital and outpatient imaging locations. Every single one of our radiologists brings something unique to the team, and we love when we get a chance to highlight them so that patients get a chance to learn more about them not just professionally, but also on a personal level.

Today we’re sharing a little bit more about Dr. Gina Midmore, an incredibly talented jack-of-all-trades who holds Board Certifications in not one, but two categories: Women’s Imaging and Musculoskeletal Radiology. We sat down (virtually) and asked her a couple of questions about life as a radiologist, her professional accomplishments, and what she loves doing when she’s not in the office. Here are her responses!

What qualities make a great radiologist?

I have had the pleasure of working with several outstanding radiologists in my career, and they have all demonstrated a passion for learning and a passion for patient care. Radiology and Medicine in general are fluid fields including new advances with updated guidelines constantly being implemented to help achieve the best patient outcomes possible. These Radiologists have taught me that we have to actively seek out these advances in our field, as well as those we support in order to make us an invaluable member of the patient care team.

What’s your favorite inspirational quote?

"We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing." This quote has been attributed to multiple authors, but I don't think it really matters who said it first. It rings true regardless. Never let go of your inner child.

What would you tell a patient who is anxious about an upcoming procedure?

I find many patients come in for biopsies or injections with a preconceived idea regarding what will happen during the procedure, which is oftentimes not an accurate representation of the experience. I explain the procedure before we start, then let the patient know what to anticipate next during the procedure, and later what to expect after the procedure. Patients do remarkable well when they have a general understanding of what is happening and that things are going smoothly. Reassurance and a calm atmosphere go a long way in making procedures more agreeable for all involved.

What is something that we wouldn’t know about you?

In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my husband and our fur babies, Lady, Abby, Guinness, and our newest kitten, Pinot. My husband and I enjoy scuba diving and make trips when we can, usually ending up somewhere in the Caribbean. On our last dive trip, we were fortunate enough to swim with whale sharks, making that trip one of the most special for us!

It’s so important to remember that your radiologist isn’t just your doctor, they’re a person too! Understanding who they are both personally and professionally can go a long way towards reassuring you that you’re trusting the right person with your care.
