How MRI Scans Work
MRI, which stands for magnetic resonance imaging, is a safe imaging technique that doesn’t involve radiation. To produce high-quality images of organs and soft tissues, it uses a strong magnetic field paired with radiofrequency pulses and sophisticated computer processing.
The magnetic field in an MRI scanner works by temporarily aligning hydrogen protons in your body, then “hitting” them with radio waves, and finally detecting the weak electromagnetic signals that the protons emit as they return to their initial position. These signals are processed and converted into cross-sectional images that the radiologist interprets.

What to Expect During an MRI
The general duration of an MRI scan is around 30 to 60 minutes.

How CT Scans Work

Then a computer combines these pictures and produces a series of slices, revealing a detailed image of the body’s organs.
Since CT uses X-rays, it exposes patients to a certain amount of ionizing radiation. However, modern CT scanners are equipped with lighting and shielding that perfectly measure and limit the dose for safety and accuracy. The advantage of CT, therefore, by far outweighs the small dose of radiation. These tests are exceptional for examining bones and lungs, and acute internal conditions where detail is required. They are also widely utilized in the emergency department as they are very fast and can detect fractures, internal bleeding, lung abnormalities, and early signs of stroke almost immediately.
What to Expect During a CT
A CT scan is typically much faster than an MRI, often completed in 5 to 10 minutes. Like an MRI, you will lie on a table that moves through a short, donut-shaped scanner. But unlike an MRI, the CT machine is quiet, and the exam is generally straightforward. In some cases, contrast dye may be administered to enhance image clarity.
